Ruins of the “Tomb of John the Apostle” at the Basilica of St. John, Ephesus, Turkey

Built by Justinian I in the 6th century, little is known about the Basilica of St. John in Selçuk, a few kilometers northeast of the ancient city of Ephesus. John's traditional tomb is thought to be located here and after the completion of the basilica, it was regarded as one of the holiest sites of its time. The church fell into disrepair after only 300 years of use and today, only the bases, columns and capitals of the nave and a few of the outer walls are still standing.
